Copper is what turns your skin green and none of Maekavera’s jewelry is made with copper. So now that that’s out of the way, here’s a little jewelry lesson....

We have jewelry made in 14k or 18k solid Gold, Sterling Silver, Gold Fill, Gold Vermeil, 18k Gold plated Brass, 18k Gold plated Stainless Steel and solid Stainless Steel. I know… it sounds like a lot but it’s just so everyone can feel like a badass at any price range okkkk let me break it down…

If you want to keep your jewelry on at all times for the rest of your life (and then pass it down) you have to go with solid gold, sterling silver or gold filled.

Gold is gold, it will never change.

Sterling Silver can tarnish but the chemical makeup of your piece will not change and discoloration can be easily removed. Change only occurs on the surface so you can clean it to make it bright white and shiny again.

Gold Fill is absolutely your best option after solid gold for quality and durability. It can not flake off or turn your skin green and offers a great option for people with sensitive skin.  Gold filled jewelry can stay beautiful for a lifetime, especially with a little care. Gold fill is when there is a thick layer of real, solid gold fused to a brass core.  The 14k/18k gold that’s on the outside is the same gold as you would get from a solid gold piece. It’s required to have a minimum of 5% gold by weight and that may not sound like a lot, but it’s all on the outside and it's plenty to keep your jewelry looking great for many years.

Gold plated is usually a metal such as brass or any other type of metal covered with real gold, giving a great look but one that will have to be maintained.

Gold Vermeil is sterling silver jewelry dipped in 18k gold. No surface finish is permanent, eventually the gold will wear off but underneath there will always be a precious metal and it can be redipped in gold or polished back to silver.

If you’re ballin on a budget or just want to wear 13 rings and 6 anklets at a time and can’t buy them all in real gold (like me) we also have pieces made from 18k gold plated brass, 18k gold plated stainless steel and solid stainless steel. No surface finish is permanent so the gold plated pieces require a little extra care to stay fresh. They won’t turn but the gold can wear off if not taken care of properly. Take care of these by avoiding contact with moisture - water, perfume, hand sanitizer + other chemicals and remove jewelry while cleaning, showering, exercising, sleeping.
